Learning Beyond the Classroom and Creating Unlimited Learning Opportunities
Rosaryhill Secondary School values the growth of each student and is committed to inspire students to unleash their full potential in their 6-year secondary school life. The authentic multilingual environment greatly increases students’ opportunities to learn different languages. Also, students can exercise what they have learned and exceed their own limitations through project learning and activities in Experiential Learning Week. The school principal, Ms. So Pui-ting, believes that the abundant learning experiences are invaluable to students’ future development and growth, and will help them face unknown challenges in the future.
Optimising the Dynamic International Environment and Boosting Interest in Language Learning
70% of their students are from over 17 different countries and students use mainly English language in their daily communication as they are from different countries, which helps build a language-rich environment. Since there are limitations in solely classroom learning, the school offers a lot of English activities to increase students’ exposure and thereby, enhance their interest in the English language, such as English Café, English Drama Club, English is Fun Day, Story-telling program and monthly English is Fun Quiz. The school hopes to create a relaxing and pleasant learning environment to encourage students to interact and enhance their communications skills using English language. Besides, students are strongly encouraged to join different activities and competitions both inside and outside the school. More than 95% of the students who participated in the Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival have won awards since 2016, more than 201 awards have been awarded, including 12 first places, 23 second places and 20 third places. Students also received many other prizes and outstanding performance awards in the Covid-19 Winter Writing Competition and Voices for the Planet Challenge 2021.
Integrating Spanish Language into the Curriculum and Enhancing Global Competitiveness
Experiential Learning Week – Learning Beyond the Curriculum
‘The world is a classroom and life is the teacher.’ is the school’s long-standing belief. Junior form students engage in activities outside the school during the Experiential Learning Week. Ms. So Pui-ting recalled, ‘Before the pandemic, while S.1 students visited museums and completed project studies to learn about the early history of Hong Kong, S.2 students learned about the principles of aviation and created their own flying tools with their creativity and scientific knowledge under the guidance of teachers. S.3 students visited Mai Po Nature Reserve and the Zhongshan 760 Creativity Industrial Zone, to learn about appreciating nature and the current development of the cultural and creative industries in Mainland China respectively.’ Learning beyond the boundaries through visiting and exploring different communities has enriched students’ knowledge while cultivating their character and generic skills.
For senior form students, the school has arranged domestic and overseas study tours to Shanghai, Okinawa, Seoul, and Vienna. Ms. So Pui-ting shared, ‘In Vienna, students gained a better understanding of classical music and art, and they were fortunate to be able to perform in public surrounded by artistic architecture. The Tokyo STEM study tour allowed students to showcase their original and creative ideas by integrating knowledge of science, mathematics, and technology. As for the study tour to Seoul, students practised their critical thinking skills in completing projects about sustainable development and respect for the environment.’ |
Exploring the Vision of Future Urban Development
In view of the transformation of cities into smart cities around the globe, apart from enriching students’ knowledge of global languages and culture, the school also attaches great importance to develop students’ scientific and technological knowledge. At the 1st CAFEA Young Talent Smart City Forum, students won the Best Academic Article Award among 25 participating teams for their article ‘How Virtual Reality (VR) enhances students’ learning experiences in History Subject’, which was based on campus life. Students integrated their understanding of humanistic spirit in history lessons with their knowledge in VR, which paved the way for them to become innovative talents with both theoretical and practical skills. Students also joined the Ocean Park STEAM Student Competition 2021. The theme of the competition was ‘Innovation for Conservation’, in which students were invited to apply their knowledge and skills acquired from STEAM-related disciplines to propose innovative solutions to animal conservation issues. Excitedly, our S.5 students won the championship in the ‘Butterfly Friendly Garden’ contest, which is a shot in the arm for the school STEAM education.
Enhancing Learning Through Cross-subjects/teams Collaboration
The school actively promotes cross-subjects and cross-teams collaborations. For example, the Library Team collaborates with different departments in organising activities using online learning platforms to promote e-Reading, cross-curricular reading and self-directed learning. The reading passages selected by panel heads of various subjects align with the curriculum and extend students’ knowledge base.
As mentioned, CAFEA Young Talent Smart City Forum allowed students to integrate their learning in subjects like English Language and Geography. Students’ creativity and excellent performances were well appreciated by the judges. Besides, subjects like History and English Language collaborated to promote the concept of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). Teachers were invited to share their successful teaching experience with teachers from other schools.
Furthermore, school campus TV, RosaryView Creative Team has provided opportunities for teachers and students to work together, showing their creativity and fluency in both English and Chinese languages in producing different programs. The production of different campus TV programmes helps train students’ communication skills and build their self-confidence.

Pass on the Torch by Connecting Alumni Networks
The Career and Life Planning Team of the school and Rosaryhill School Old Students Association (RHSOSA) have been jointly organising a Mentorship Program since 2009. ‘We hope to bring alumni and students together as mentors and friends through this platform, and help students build positive life values. Moreover, similar campus life and learning experiences help arouse the resonance of students and stimulate their motivation to work hard.’ In the program, some students had the opportunity to visit the cockpit of a plane and catch a glimpse of the ‘office’ of pilots, while others visited the Court Building and Hong Kong Monetary Authority to learn about the daily operations behind the important judicial and financial system in Hong Kong. Mock interviews are also organised to train the communication and presentation skills of students. Under the guidance of the mentors, students could gain insight into a wide range of industries, so that they can plan their future early and be well-prepared in achieving their dreams.
